Responding to victim-survivors of domestic and family violence (DFV) is specialised work. Specialist DFV services are victim-survivor-centred and safety is paramount, culturally appropriate and responsive to the needs of marginalised cohorts. DFV practice is trauma and gendered-violence informed, utilises a human rights and social justice framework, and takes a child-aware and parent sensitive approach when working with families. Specialist DFV services work with an intersectional feminist lens, demonstrating an understanding of DFV as a gendered issue and work to empower victim-survivors.
The full DVNSW DFV Specialisation Definition and Assessment describes the specific and expert work of responding to victim-survivors of domestic and family violence. It is informed by the DVNSW Good Practice Guidelines and is used to support services to self-assess their knowledge, skills, experience, systems and processes.
It is also used as a framework for DVNSW membership criteria and by government departments working with domestic and family violence programs, organisations, and services.
