A win on safe access zones

Last week we had a win – safe access zones to protect patients from harassment at abortion clinics will become law in NSW.

The legislation creating safe access zones passed its final hurdle in the early hours of the morning, when lower house MPs voted 61 – 18 to approve the zones, after more than 12 hours of debate (and 19 attempts at amendments).

These zones will provide important protection for patients’ privacy and dignity – and bring an end to the yelling, jostling, and even filming of patients and their families that has been happening at clinics up until now.

Huge thanks to Fair Agenda and everyone else who campaigned so hard on this – including MPs Trevor Khan and Penny Sharpe who co-sponsored the bill in the NSW Upper House.
